GrdF is the new name for our natural gas distribution business, and for 60 years of service.

GrDF has inherited Gaz de France’s natural gas distribution activity.
To comply with the European directives opening up the natural gas market in France, the distribution business is now a subsidiary of GDF SUEZ. From now on, any new natural gas supplier can transmit its gas in France via the distribution network managed by GrDF, setting the scene for the opening up of the market.

It happened yesterday: opening up the natural gas market

The French energy market was thrown wide open on 1 July 2007: suddenly, 11 million French residential customers were set free to choose their natural gas supplier. Till then, natural gas was sold in the competitive market, but its distribution and management of the grid was treated as a non-competitive public service.

GrDF, an independent distributor

GrDF guarantees open and equitable access to the distribution network to all natural gas suppliers, historical or otherwise. There are currently 11 suppliers to the French market, 4 of them serving residential customers—you buy your gas from them, GrDF delivers it.

Core missions

GrDF handles the construction, maintenance and operation of natural gas networks under concession contracts with local authorities.

Today GrDF serves more than 9,200 municipalities in France.

For GrDF, safety is central to its industrial operations—safety on the ground for its workers, and for you in the vicinity of natural gas distribution installations. Butsafety also means permanent surveillance of the network, and public service through the provision of repairs and 24/7 (round the clock, 7-day a week) emergency services (+ link to Emergency number). Serving the wider community, GrDF missions include protecting our environment by opting for the best energy solutions, through its contribution to territorial development, and by meeting residents’ desires and needs.
